Internet Class Conduct

Internet Class Conduct

Nov 15

As many of you know I take my entire courseload online. I’m actually getting my criminal justice degree completely online with a local community college (if you considered 80 miles local). I was doing my daily check on classes to see if any announcements were posted and checked the discussion boards.

My English professor asked what we thought of the past week (library week stuff, boring MLA format blah blah) and someone decided to reply “This week blows.” My jaw dropped. Seriously? A college level English class and you reply with something as immature and inappropriate as that? I hope I’m not just being old, but last time I checked you don’t disrespect professors like that. There’s a constructive way to give feedback and it certainly is NOT “This week blows.”

Another person in my meteorology class also said to the professor in a discussion post about a recent quiz we just had. For some reason there is now a 25 minute wait period between the first and second attempts. She said ” I just got screwed out of my second attempt. It’s BS. Oh and if your going to have a quiz, make sure you don’t make mistakes on the quiz.”

He gives us an entire week to do a 10 question multiple question quiz with an OPEN BOOK. You wait until after 11:35 to take it the night it’s due? That’s your problem. Then swearing on a public forum. Third, if you want to insult a professor on his quiz maybe you should spell “your” in its proper format, you’re. She could have asked if he could re-open the quiz (which he did after apologizing to her) instead of throwing a hissy fit. I thought I was in college, not middle school.

  1. I’m starting online classes through a local college in January and I am sure my experiences will be quite similar! What do you find to be your average manageable class / credit load per semester? I am trying to figure out if I should jump right in and take 5 classes at the maximum credits the first semester or if I will feel overwhelmed. I currently am a SAHM of an older child so I am hoping I can balance this pretty well.

I’m currently taking 6 classes (18 hours) and it’s very time consuming to combine with working at home and taking care of a toddler. I think with an older child it is probably a bit easier to maintain, but you may want to try doing 12, which is considered full-time at most schools for the first semester until you get into the groove of doing classes online.
